Handmade or Reclaimed — Which Do You Need?

We stock two types of facing brick, and the right one usually comes down to what your project has to satisfy rather than personal taste.

Handmade bricks are newly made, thrown by hand into sanded moulds from soft clay. That gives genuine texture and colour variation without the constraints of salvaged stock — you can order the quantity you need, in the colour you need, and get more of the same later. Close to 400 in stock across every major colour family.

Reclaimed bricks are genuinely salvaged from demolished buildings, cleaned and graded. Every mark is decades or centuries old. This matters where planning conditions specifically require reclaimed material, which is common in conservation areas and on listed buildings.

Full detail on each is on our handmade bricks and reclaimed bricks pages.

Brick Sizes & Coursing

Bricks come in two standard depths and this catches people out more than colour does. 65mm is the modern standard used on most new build and extension work. 73mm is the imperial-era depth, needed when matching older properties.

If you are extending an existing house, measure a course of the existing brickwork including the mortar joint before ordering. Get this wrong and the new brickwork will not line through with the old — an expensive mistake to discover once the bricklayer is on site.

Samples & UK Delivery

Brick colour shifts noticeably between full sun and an overcast day, so a photograph is not enough when you are matching existing brickwork. Brick samples are available across both ranges, any three for £7.99 — hold them against the actual wall, outdoors, at different times of day.

We deliver by pallet to any UK mainland address, including London, Essex and the South East where a large part of our brick trade sits. If you are unsure which blend is closest to your existing brickwork, send us a photo — we do this regularly and it costs you nothing. Call 01772 287622.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between handmade and reclaimed bricks?

Handmade bricks are newly made by hand in sanded moulds, giving genuine texture with repeatable availability. Reclaimed bricks are salvaged from demolished buildings, so every mark is genuinely old — which matters where planning conditions require authentic reclaimed material.

Which bricks do I need for a conservation area?

Check your planning conditions. Reclaimed brick is frequently a stated requirement rather than a preference on conservation and listed building work. Our handmade heritage blends suit projects where reclaimed isn't specifically mandated.

What size bricks do I need — 65mm or 73mm?

65mm is the modern standard for most new build and extension work. 73mm is the imperial depth needed to match older properties. Measure a course of your existing brickwork including the mortar joint before ordering, as the two course very differently.

How do I match bricks to my existing house?

Order samples of two or three close options and compare them against the actual wall outdoors, in different light. Check mortar colour too. You can also send us a photo of your existing brickwork and we'll suggest the closest match.

How many bricks do I need?

As a rough guide, around 60 bricks per square metre for a single skin wall in standard 65mm format. Add about 5% for cuts and breakages. Call us on 01772 287622 if you'd like help working out quantities.

Do you deliver bricks across the UK?

Yes, to any UK mainland address, including London, Essex and the South East where a significant part of our brick trade sits. The delivery charge depends on your postcode and the number of pallets. Delivered on pallets via a national pallet network, kerbside only — someone must be available to accept the delivery.

Can I get brick samples?

Yes. Any three brick samples are £7.99 delivered by DPD, and when they are dispatched we email you a £7.99 discount code for your full order. Given how much brick colour shifts depending on light, we'd always recommend seeing one before ordering.
