Victorian housing is built almost universally from imperial bricks, typically 73mm deep. Using a modern 65mm brick on a Victorian wall produces coursing that will not line through, which is immediately obvious once laid.
Victorian brickwork also tends toward red and red multi tones that have mellowed considerably. A brick that matches the original fired colour often looks too bright against a hundred and fifty years of weathering.
